ABT at the forefront with BIM

Three impressive projects are planned across the Netherlands: the new courthouse in Amsterdam, the CineMec cinema in Nijmegen and the complex laboratory project Bèta Campus fase 2 in Leiden. Three projects that call for an impressive working method. ABT has long been at the forefront with Revit and BIM. Their strength is taking care of all structural engineering under one roof for their clients.

Ad van der Aa (l) is senior advisor and moved in 2013 from a mono-disciplinary agency to ABT consultancy because he believes in integrated working. Considerable progress has been made lately when it comes to BIM and Revit in the department of installation technology and building physics. This department now employs 40 people and has positive future prospects. In addition, ABT benefits from the Revit developments in other disciplines within the agency, that may be more advanced with BIM. The development of BIM in the consulting firm is managed by Rudy de Smedt (r). This is done by developing and training modelers, as well as by providing the internal course "Revit for non-modelers." Rudy: "Well-trained people with knowledge of both installation engineering and Revit are scarce. The goal of the course is to make people realize that the calculations they are now running in Excel, also can be done in Revit."

Ad: "There are a number of people here who have so much knowledge and experience they practically have become BIM. Last year, we started to think about what we really wish to achieve with BIM. What is the added value? For us it is certainly not a model for making pretty pictures or just to see space requirements in 3D. BIM is about managing, structuring, coordinating, and capturing information. And there is a need to deploy it in a clear and productive way."
